China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) has helped upgrade Kenya’s transportation system by rehabilitating the commuter meter-gauge railway (MGR) and operating the Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway (SGR). Following the MGR restoration, peak-hour commuting time in Mombasa has been cut from over an hour to just 30 minutes, with a fare of 50 Kenyan shillings (approximately RMB 3). Through upgraded freight equipment and digital dispatch systems, the Mombasa-Nairobi SGR has reduced grain transport time from over 30 hours to 8-9 hours, carrying over 17 million passengers and 45 million tons of cargo to date. The project has also fostered local talent through a mentorship program, achieving a localization rate of over 90%. With plans to extend westward to the Ugandan border, it continues to strengthen regional connectivity across East Africa.
