Chinese Firms Break Ground on Ethiopia's Mieso-Dire Dawa Highway

On August 9th, the groundbreaking ceremony for the 144-kilometer Mieso-Dire Dawa Highway was held in Dire Dawa, Ethiopia, undertaken by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and Sichuan Road and Bridge Group with a 4-year construction period.

Temesgen Tiruneh, Deputy Prime Minister of Ethiopia, noted road transport accounts for 90% of the country’s passenger and cargo traffic, and the highway connecting Oromia, Somali regions and Dire Dawa will boost regional economic and cultural exchanges. Chinese representatives said 75% of the team will be local employees, with a "mentor-apprentice" program to train Ethiopian engineers. The project will strengthen links with Djibouti Port, reducing logistics costs and enhancing regional investment appeal.
