On
the 11th, Algeria, Nigeria, and Niger signed an agreement in Algiers, the
capital of Algeria, to advance the Trans-Saharan Natural Gas Pipeline project.
The agreement was signed during the fourth ministerial meeting of the project's
steering committee. Algerian Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab,
stated that the project reflects a "shared vision of building a strategic
bridge between Africa and the world," and that updated feasibility studies
would help "accelerate the implementation of this important project within
a reasonable timeframe and at competitive costs."
The
Trans-Saharan Natural Gas Pipeline is expected to cost approximately $13
billion and span over 4,000 kilometers. Once completed, it will transport
Nigerian natural gas through Niger to Algeria, from where it will be delivered
to Europe via existing pipelines. In 2022, Algeria, Niger, and Nigeria signed a
memorandum of understanding for the construction of the Trans-Saharan Natural
Gas Pipeline.
