Communications, Signaling and Power Supply Systems Project for Africa’s First Heavy-Haul Desert Railway Gets Underway

On July 2, construction of the communications, signaling and power supply systems for Algeria’s Western Mining Railway officially began. The 950-km railway includes a 575-km section constructed by China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) and local state-owned enterprises, making it the largest infrastructure project undertaken by Chinese enterprises in Algeria. The railway has strengthened Algeria’s national rail network and improved connectivity and economic development in the southwest. The project covers communications, signaling and power supply systems along the railway, as well as related facilities at 10 stations, 28 passing stations and four centralized control centers. It will establish modern operational control, information transmission and power supply systems, supporting local mineral resource development and economic diversification. The Western Mining Railway will transport up to 50 million tonnes of iron ore annually while also serving passenger transport needs.
